Section 1
Short title and commencement
Names the Act and lets the Central Government bring different provisions into force on different dates.
Read this before you cite anything here
These pages are a plain-English restatement, written to help you find the right provision and understand what it asks of you. They are not the text of the statute, and nothing here should be quoted as though it were. Section and rule numbers are exact, and every page names its source.
What it says
- (1)
- The Act is called the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023.
- (2)
- It comes into force on the date the Central Government appoints by notification, and different dates may be appointed for different provisions.
In practice
The staggered commencement in sub-section (2) is why the Act and the Rules do not switch on together, and why a compliance date has to be read off the Rules rather than assumed from the Act’s 2023 assent.
